Sony audio equipment repair
Sony audio: STR-DN and STR-AZ HDMI boards, PROTECTOR mode, CDP-CE500 laser pickup, PS-LX310BT drive belt.
Three Sony audio faults come in regularly. STR-DN and STR-AZ AV receivers lose HDMI — video and audio through HDMI drop out while analogue inputs still work. Integrated amps like the TA-A1ES trip into PROTECTOR — protection engages from blown output transistors or swollen caps in the power supply. And CDP-series CD players stop reading discs — laser pickups wear out in 8–12 years.
We work component-level: the HDMI processor is replaced on its own, output transistors go back in matched pairs, all channel relays get swapped at once (so the unit does not come apart a second time), CD drives get a new laser pickup with focus and tracking servo calibration. PS-LX-series turntables — belt replacement, bearing clean-up, speed set with a strobe disc.
Popular models we repair
- Sony STR-DN1080 / STR-AZ3000ES AV receivers
- Sony TA-A1ES integrated amplifier
- Sony CDP-CE500 CD changer
- Sony PS-LX310BT turntable
- Sony HAP-Z1ES high-resolution music player
- Sony MHC-V73D party speaker system
- Sony CMT-SBT100 compact micro system
Common problems we fix
- HDMI board failure on STR receivers — no picture or sound via HDMI while indicators work
- No sound / protection mode indicator blinking (PROTECTOR) — output transistors or relays
- CD mechanism not reading discs — laser pickup worn or dirty, drive motor seized
- Turntable belt stretching — unstable speed, motor hum
- Power supply clicking on startup — swollen electrolytic capacitors, standby circuit failure
- Relay oxidation in channel switching — crackling, sound dropout in one channel
- Overheating and thermal cutoff — unit shuts down after 10–15 minutes of operation
- Digital audio output (optical/coaxial) no signal — DAC or output stage failure

Sony AV receiver and amplifier repair
Sony STR-DN and STR-AZ series AV receivers are among the most popular multichannel receivers on the Latvian market. The main faults owners bring to us include: HDMI board failure (no video or audio signal via HDMI while analogue inputs work fine), PROTECTOR mode activation (blinking indicator, unit will not exit protection mode), and sound degradation — crackling, clicking, or signal dropout in one or more channels due to oxidised switching relays. We work at the component level: replacing HDMI processors and surrounding components, re-soldering output transistors, changing all channel relays simultaneously (to avoid repeated disassembly), and restoring power supply circuits by replacing swollen electrolytic capacitors.
Sony integrated amplifiers — such as the TA-A1ES — are high-end units that last decades with proper maintenance. Typical age-related issues include drying out of electrolytic capacitors in power supply and preamplifier circuits (causing 50 Hz hum and loss of dynamics), oxidation of volume potentiometers and input selectors, and output stage overheating due to degraded thermal paste on heat sinks. We perform a full overhaul: capacitor replacement, potentiometer cleaning and lubrication, thermal interface renewal, and verification of all stage operating points using an oscilloscope. All work carries a 3-month warranty.
Sony CD player and turntable repair
Sony CD players — such as the CDP-CE500 — remain popular among physical media enthusiasts. The primary fault is laser pickup failure: the drive does not recognise discs, skips tracks, or plays with clicking. We replace the laser pickup, calibrate the optical system, and verify the focus and tracking servo motors. Beyond optics, CD drives develop loading mechanism wear over time — the tray sticks, gears strip. We restore the mechanics and replace worn drive components as needed.
Sony PS-LX310BT and other belt-drive turntables suffer from drive belt stretching — the record begins to drift in speed, especially noticeable on longer tracks. The second characteristic issue is motor hum caused by bearing wear or lubricant contamination on the pulley. We fit a new belt, inspect and repair the motor if needed, and set the precise rotation speed (33⅓ and 45 RPM) using a strobe disc. We also service the tonearm — adjusting tracking force, anti-skate, and replacing the stylus if necessary. All work is carried out at our service centre with a 3-month warranty.
