3-month warranty

The SATER service centre at Silmaču iela 6, Riga, has been repairing food processors and stand mixers since 1993. We work with KitchenAid (Artisan, Heavy Duty), Kenwood (Chef, Major, Cooking Chef), Bosch MUM, Moulinex, Philips, Magimix, Braun, Ankarsrum, Electrolux Assistent and Thermomix TM5. We handle bowl-type processors, planetary stand mixers, compact prep processors and their attachments. The most common faults: worn motor carbon brushes, a stripped nylon worm gear on planetary mixers (a deliberately sacrificial part that fails before the steel motor), worn planetary gear bearings, failed speed-control electronics, a faulty safety microswitch, a cracked drive coupling, a motor overheat protector stuck in cut-out, damage to the attachment power-hub drive, and broken belts on some Bosch MUM models. For each assembly we work with original or compatible spare parts. Honest economics: KitchenAid, Kenwood Chef, Magimix and Ankarsrum are almost always worth repairing — repair costs 3–5 times less than a new unit, and with proper care they last 20–30 years. Supermarket processors at €60–80 with a burnt-out motor — we say honestly that labour and parts cost more than new. On Thermomix: we service TM5 and earlier, but TM6 is firmware-locked. Repairs 2–5 working days, 3-month warranty. Call +371 67377002.

Common problems we fix

  • Worn motor carbon brushes — sparks, weak motor, unusual noise
  • Stripped nylon worm gear (KitchenAid, Kenwood) — motor runs but no drive
  • Worn planetary gear bearings — loud operation, motor shaft play
  • Failed speed-control electronics — dial inoperative, single-speed running
  • Safety microswitch does not start the motor — lid or bowl lock fault
  • Cracked drive coupling — motor turns but bowl or blade does not
  • Attachment power hub not working — accessories fail to drive
  • Motor overheat protector stuck — machine will not start
  • Bosch MUM drive belt broken or stretched — slipping under load

Detailed problem guides

Pick a symptom — we walk through the causes, what you can check yourself, and when to bring it in.

Component-level diagnosis of food processors and planetary mixers

At the core of a planetary mixer is a powerful AC or DC motor (typically 300–1500 W) with carbon brushes and a geared transmission that converts rotation into planetary motion — the beater turns on its own axis while also orbiting the bowl centre. On KitchenAid and Kenwood Chef stand mixers, the main load falls on the worm gear, which is made of nylon by design and acts as a mechanical fuse: dough that is too stiff or a foreign object in the bowl strips the gear before the much more expensive motor is damaged. We check every gear and bearing visually, test motor brushes with a multimeter, and measure motor speed and load current.

Compact bowl-type processors (Magimix, Moulinex FP, Philips HR) use a different layout — a vertical direct-drive motor with safety microswitches on both the lid and the bowl lock. If a microswitch wears out or the bowl does not seat correctly, the motor will not start even when everything else is fine. Bosch MUM5 and some Kenwood models run on a flexible drive belt — if it stretches or breaks, the mixer slips under load. Speed-control electronics (thyristor, triac, SCR regulator) often fail after many years of use — we diagnose at component level and replace the faulty part rather than the whole board. After the repair the mixer is tested under load with real dough or vegetables.

Honest repair economics and long-term care

KitchenAid Artisan or Heavy Duty, Kenwood Chef and Cooking Chef, Magimix Cuisine, Ankarsrum Assistent are engineered as 20–30 year machines — metal housings, replaceable parts and simple mechanics. That means almost any major fault — stripped gear, worn brushes, failed electronics, overheated motor — is materially cheaper to repair than to replace. We speak plainly with customers: if you own a €500–900 mixer and the repair is €60–150, the choice is obvious. But if a €60 supermarket processor has lost its motor after two years and the part plus labour comes to €50, we say so honestly — replacing it is the better call.

For long-term care, a few tips from our 30+ years of experience. First, do not overload planetary mixers — the nylon gear is designed as a fuse, and its failure is a sign the dough batch was too stiff or too large. Second, keep the motor vents free of flour dust — overheating is the second most common cause of motor failure. Third, always unplug the machine before cleaning and never wet the main housing — only the bowl, lid and attachment. Fourth, the KitchenAid and Kenwood power hub should be greased with a food-safe compatible grease every five years — we do this as part of scheduled servicing. We discuss all work before starting, and every repair carries a 3-month warranty.
