Hisense, TCL, Xiaomi — these brands have conquered the market with aggressive pricing. A new 50-inch 4K television for €250-400 is the reality of 2025-2026. But when such a TV breaks after 1-3 years, the question arises: repair it or simply buy another?
At the SATER service centre, we're seeing budget televisions on the diagnostic bench with increasing frequency. The answer to "is it worth repairing?" isn't always straightforward. Sometimes the repair costs €40-60 and extends the TV's life by 3-5 years. Sometimes the repair cost approaches the price of a new unit, and fixing it loses all sense.
Price Context
Current prices for new budget TVs in Latvia (2025-2026):
- 32" (80 cm) HD/Full HD: €120-180
- 43" (108 cm) 4K UHD: €200-300
- 50" (126 cm) 4K UHD: €250-380
- 55" (139 cm) 4K UHD: €300-450
- 65" (163 cm) 4K UHD: €400-600
Keep these figures in mind — they're needed for comparison with repair costs.
Typical Budget TV Failures
LED Backlight — Failure Number One
Budget TVs skimp on LED backlighting. Manufacturers use cheaper components that operate at the upper limit of permissible current. Result: burnt-out LEDs after 2-4 years.
Symptoms: Sound works but screen is completely dark (shining a torch at the screen reveals a faint image).
Repair cost: LED strip replacement — €40 to €120 depending on screen size.
Power Supply — Second Most Common
Budget TV power supplies use simpler components. Capacitors swell faster, especially in homes with unstable voltage.
Repair cost: Capacitor replacement from €25. Full board replacement €40-80.
Smart TV Software Issues
Freezing, slow performance, inability to update. Often resolved by factory reset or reflashing.
The Spare Parts Problem
The main issue with repairing Hisense, TCL, and Xiaomi is parts availability. Unlike Samsung and LG with their established EU service infrastructure, Chinese brands are still building their supply chains.
What this means in practice: power supplies and LED strips often must be ordered from China (2-4 weeks delivery), main boards for some models aren't available as spare parts at all, and compatible components are fewer than for Samsung/LG.
When Repair Makes Sense (The 40% Rule)
At SATER, we use a simple rule: if repair cost doesn't exceed 40% of a new equivalent TV's price, repair is justified.
Examples:
- 50" Hisense, new costs €300. Backlight repair — €80. Yes, repair. (27%)
- 32" TCL, new costs €150. Power supply repair — €40. Yes, repair. (27%)
- 43" Xiaomi, new costs €250. Main board replacement — €130. No, buy new. (52%)
When Repair Is NOT Justified
- TV is over 4-5 years old — technology has advanced; a new one at the same price will be significantly better
- Multiple failures — backlight + power supply + Smart TV glitches
- Panel damage — cracked screen, widespread pixel failure — not economically repairable
- Parts unavailable — if the required component isn't manufactured or supplied
