LG TVs are among the most popular in Latvia and across Europe. LG OLED models are widely considered the best on the market for picture quality, while the NanoCell and UHD series offer excellent value. But even reliable technology occasionally fails. Here are the most common LG TV problems and how to fix them.
LG TV Won't Turn On
If your LG TV doesn't respond to the remote or the power button, start with these basic steps:
Power check:
- Make sure the wall outlet works — plug in another device to test
- Check the power cable — it should be firmly seated at both ends
- Unplug the TV from the wall for 60 seconds — this resets the internal processor
- Plug it back in and press the power button on the TV itself (not the remote)
If the indicator is on but the screen is black:
- Press and hold the power button on the TV for 10 seconds — forced restart
- Try a different input source (different HDMI port)
- Shine a flashlight on the screen — if you see a faint image, the backlight has failed
Indicator blinking patterns:
- Red indicator blinks ≈ 3 times — power board issue
- Red indicator blinks continuously — Main Board error
- No indicator at all — no power (check outlet, cable, fuse)
LG TV Black Screen with Sound
Screen is black but sound works — one of the most common LG problems. Causes:
- LED backlight failure — the most frequent cause. LEDs burn out over time, especially if brightness is always set to maximum
- T-Con board problem — responsible for image processing
- Main Board error — the main board isn't sending a video signal
Quick diagnostic: Turn on the TV in a dark room and shine a flashlight on the screen. If you can see a faint image — the backlight has failed. This is a repairable problem: the LED strips need to be replaced.
LG TV No Sound
If there's no sound at all:
- Check if the sound is muted (Mute button on the remote)
- Check the volume — it may have been reset to 0
- Go to Settings → Sound → Sound Out — make sure TV Speakers is selected
- If sound is going to an external device, switch the output back to TV
If sound is distorted or intermittent:
- Check sound settings: Settings → Sound → Sound Mode — try different modes
- Disable AI Sound — it sometimes causes distortion
- Reset sound settings: Settings → Sound → Reset
If there's no sound through HDMI:
- Check that the HDMI cable is connected to the correct port (ARC/eARC — usually HDMI 2)
- Enable SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC): Settings → General → SIMPLINK
- Change audio output to HDMI ARC in sound settings
LG TV Picture Problems
Vertical or horizontal lines
- Thin colored lines — usually a T-Con board or panel ribbon cable issue
- Wide bands — LCD panel failure
- Lines that appear and disappear — contact problem (ribbon cable)
Flickering image
- Disable Energy Saving: Settings → General → Energy Saving
- Disable TruMotion: Settings → Picture → Picture Mode Settings → TruMotion → Off
- Check your HDMI cable — a damaged cable can cause flickering
OLED burn-in
If you can see "ghosts" of static elements on your LG OLED screen (channel logos, game HUDs):
- Run Pixel Refresher: Settings → Support → OLED Care → Pixel Refresher
- Reduce brightness — OLED panels last longer at moderate brightness levels
- Use a screen saver when the TV is idle
LG webOS: Smart TV Problems
Apps freeze or crash
- Update webOS: Settings → General → About This TV → Check for Updates
- Clear app cache: delete and reinstall the problematic app
- Reset Smart TV: Settings → General → Reset to Initial Settings
Wi-Fi won't connect
- Restart both router and TV
- Forget the network and reconnect: Settings → Network → Wi-Fi Connection
- Try connecting via Ethernet cable — if that works, the TV's Wi-Fi module may be faulty
Magic Remote not working
- Replace the batteries (AA)
- Point the remote at the TV and hold Home + Back buttons for 5 seconds — re-pairing
- Make sure nothing is blocking the line between the remote and TV's IR sensor
When to Call a Professional
- Backlight not working (black screen with sound) — LED strip replacement
- Lines on screen won't go away after restart — T-Con board or panel issue
- No power (indicator off) — power supply unit
- Severe OLED burn-in — possible panel replacement
- Clicking sounds when turning on/off — power supply relay
