Focal audio repair

Focal Utopia, Sopra, Kanta, Aria, Chora, Solo6/Twin6 Be: Beryllium tweeters, Flax woofers, W-sandwich cones, crossovers, active studio monitors.

3-month warranty

Focal is a rare loudspeaker manufacturer that builds every driver in its own workshop and does not outsource a single part of that process. The company was founded by Jacques Mahul in 1979 in Saint-Étienne, France, and its defining engineering achievement is the industry's first inverted-dome beryllium tweeter (Inverted Aluminium-Lead 3, IAL3) for the Utopia series. Beryllium is the stiffest and impulse-fastest material used for tweeters anywhere in the industry, and Focal is one of two companies worldwide that uses it at scale (the other is TAD). The technology has a flip side: the beryllium dome is extremely fragile, and even a fingernail touch leaves a permanent dent that detunes the dome's resonance — a change you can hear on a test tone.

In Latvia we see pairs across all the main lines: Utopia (Stella, Maestro, Scala, Diablo — top-tier with $30,000+ pairs), Sopra (No 1, 2, 3 — premium with the IAL2 tweeter), Kanta (the 2017+ modern line), Aria (the main consumer line since 2012, distinctive for the linen Flax cone), Chora (the budget replacement for the early Aria), and Vestia (the new 2023+ middle line). Active studio monitors — Solo6 Be, Twin6 Be, Trio6 Be — are a separate category with an integrated Class-AB amplifier driving a Beryllium tweeter and a W-sandwich mid-bass. Professional studios in Scandinavia and the Baltics often use Focal as their reference monitors, and these pairs reach our bench with the typical active-monitor faults: output-stage breakdown, supply-rail capacitor drift, XLR input failure.

The Focal repair approach demands caution because of the beryllium: the IAL3 tweeter dome must not be touched with anything other than an air jet — do not try to lift, clean or press it with tweezers. For diagnostics we use a test signal and a measurement microphone instead of physical contact. If the beryllium is damaged, the replacement is a complete tweeter assembly from Focal Service France, and that is an expensive part — but precise replacement is the only way to retain the Utopia or Sopra character. On W-sandwich woofers (glass+foam+glass, Utopia) and Flax woofers (linen impregnation, Aria/Chora) we do routine refoaming and driver replacement on impact damage. Warranty: 3 months on the work; refoaming, 12 months.

Popular models we repair

  • Focal Utopia: Stella / Maestro / Scala / Diablo / Sopra (flagship with IAL3)
  • Focal Sopra No 1 / No 2 / No 3 (premium, IAL2 Beryllium)
  • Focal Kanta No 1 / No 2 / No 3 (modern)
  • Focal Aria 906 / 936 / 926 (Flax-cone, main line)
  • Focal Chora 806 / 826 / 816 (entry tier)
  • Focal Vestia (new 2023+)
  • Focal Solo6 Be / Twin6 Be / Trio6 Be (active studio monitors)

Common problems we fix

  • Beryllium IAL3/IAL2 dome damaged — driver replacement via Focal Service France
  • Flax woofer (Aria, Chora) deformed by impact — driver replacement
  • W-sandwich (Utopia) blistering or delaminating — driver replacement
  • Polyglass woofer rubber surrounds have lost elasticity — refoaming
  • Crossover capacitor drift on older Utopia/Sopra revisions — equivalent replacement
  • Solo6 / Twin6 / Trio6 Be will not start — amp output stage or supply
  • XLR input on studio monitors loses contact — connector replacement
  • Powered Aria Evo X / Bathys: amplifier module or Bluetooth
  • Decorative finish (high-gloss, Sopra leather) damaged — panel restoration

Pick a symptom — we walk through the causes, what you can check yourself, and when to bring it in.

The Beryllium tweeter and W-sandwich — what defines Focal's engineering signature

The beryllium dome tweeter is the best-known Focal engineering signature. Beryllium is 4.5 times stiffer per unit mass than aluminium and 2.5 times stiffer than titanium. That means the dome delivers an ideal impulse response: the transient attack of a voice or a plucked string is reproduced more precisely, without delay and without colouration from the dome's own resonances. Focal is one of two manufacturers in the world using beryllium at scale (TAD in Japan being the other); most brands abandoned beryllium because of the cost (about $1,500 per dome to manufacture) and the handling — beryllium dust is toxic if inhaled, and factories that work with it operate enclosed chambers.

Focal makes its beryllium domes in its own facility in Bourbon-Lancy, France, across three generations: IAL (the original on older Utopias), IAL2 (Sopra, mid-tier Utopia), and IAL3 (current Utopia, a full-range dome with improved impulse response). At repair time we do not attempt to "clean" or "fix" a beryllium dome — that is not possible. If it is damaged, we replace the whole tweeter (the basket, magnet system and dome assembly). Ordering through Focal Service France typically takes 4–8 weeks because it is a specialist part, not a stocked item. On Utopia W-sandwich woofers (a three-layer construction of glass-fibre + foam + glass that yields high stiffness at low mass) we repair delamination and replace drivers when impact damage is present.

Flax-cone Aria and active Solo6/Twin6 monitors — the bulk of the work

The Aria series (2012+) is "Focal at scale" — accessible in price and popular in Latvia. The Aria innovation is the Flax cone: a cone built from linen fibre impregnated with an epoxy compound. Linen yields an optimal balance of stiffness and internal damping, and sonically the Flax cone holds the midrange with a detail level close to premium Polyglass or paper while keeping the bass tight. The Aria 906 (standmounts), Aria 926 and 936 (towers) are pairs you find in many Latvian homes. Typical work: Flax-cone deformation from impact (a new driver order — not field-repairable), surround refoaming after 15–20 years, and Inverted Aluminium tweeter replacement (Aria uses an aluminium dome, not beryllium, which is more repair-friendly — replaced as a standard tweeter).

The Solo6 Be, Twin6 Be and Trio6 Be active monitors are a separate Focal Professional world. Each cabinet contains a two-channel Class-AB amplifier (BASH-style on the BE models — separate high-power channels for the woofer and the Beryllium tweeter), an electronic crossover, EQ controls and XLR inputs. These are mastering-grade monitors, used in several major Baltic studios. After 5–7 years of professional use the typical faults are: amplifier output-stage breakdown (usually one channel — tweeter or woofer), supply-rail electrolytic dry-out (50 Hz hum at idle), XLR connector oxidation (signal loss). We diagnose at the component level with an oscilloscope and test signals; in 80% of cases the repair comes down to an output transistor and a few electrolytics, without needing a whole module replacement. For the Beryllium tweeter on Solo6/Twin6 Be we apply the same approach as on Utopia/Sopra — diagnostics without physical contact, replacement through Focal Service. Refoaming carries a 12-month warranty; everything else, 3 months.
