Radiotehnika S-90 speakers start rattling on bass — after forty years the woofer surrounds lose elasticity and crack, and the midrange and treble level controls on the front panel oxidise and mute whole bands. The U-101 amplifier loses a channel or crackles on the volume control, the EP-101 turntable drifts in speed, and a tube-era Rigonda radiogram brought in from the countryside stays silent. All of these are typical age-related faults of Riga-built RRR equipment, and almost all of them are fixable.
Radiotehnika is a brand born in Riga: the company was founded in 1927, and by the 1980s the Riga plant was the largest audio manufacturer in the USSR, accounting for roughly 35% of all Soviet audio equipment. That is why S-30 and S-90 speakers, U-101 amplifiers, T-101 tuners, M-201 cassette decks and Rigonda and Simfonija radiograms are still common in Latvian homes — while factory spare parts have long been unavailable. We source compatible components and restore this equipment at component level.
We re-foam speaker surrounds, rewind voice coils, replace crossover capacitors, clean attenuators and switches, recap power supplies, match output transistor pairs and restore tube radiograms — from dried-out paper capacitors to dial lamps. S-30 and S-90 restoration — surrounds, crossovers, attenuators
The S-90 (factory designation 35AC-212, later 35AC-012) is a three-way loudspeaker the Riga plant produced in huge volumes from the early 1980s, and it is the model we see most often. Three age-related problems repeat on almost every pair. First, the woofer surrounds: over the decades the material loses elasticity, cracks and crumbles, and the bass rattles or disappears — re-foaming fixes this completely. Second, the crossover capacitors: capacitance drifts and the sound turns dull and smeared; we replace them with modern equivalents, verifying capacitance and ESR. Third, the midrange and treble level controls on the front panel: the contact tracks oxidise, causing crackling or a whole band dropping out. We disassemble, clean and restore the attenuators.
The compact S-30 and the later S-50B and S-100B suffer the same faults on a smaller scale. If a voice coil is burnt or rubbing in the magnetic gap, we rewind it or fit a compatible cone-and-coil assembly. Speaker work is always done as a pair so both units sound the same, and we verify the result with before-and-after measurements. U-101, EP-101 and the Rigonda / Simfonija tube radiograms
The U-101 amplifier was produced from 1983 as part of the Radiotehnika-101-stereo system together with the T-101 tuner, EP-101 turntable and M-201 cassette deck — and these stacks still live in many Riga flats. Typical U-101 faults: one channel dropping out or crackling due to oxidised switches and connectors, a noisy volume potentiometer, hum from dried power supply electrolytics, and output stage failure. We repair at component level: clean and restore the switching, recap the power supply, match output transistors in pairs and test the amplifier under load. On the EP-101 the usual issues are speed drift and a failed auto-stop — we restore the drive and mechanics and re-solder the pickup wiring.
We also restore the 1960s Rigonda and Simfonija tube radiograms — with one golden rule: after years of storage a radiogram must not simply be plugged in; the dried-out paper and electrolytic capacitors are replaced first.
