Printhead cleaning and pump system repair

The printhead is the heart of any inkjet Epson, and most printing faults trace back to it one way or another. Epson uses piezoelectric printheads: each microscopic piezo crystal, when energised, fires a droplet of ink through a nozzle around 30 microns across. When the printer sits idle for a long time, ink in the nozzles dries and forms a plug, and under heavy use paper dust and dried-ink particles accumulate on the nozzle plate.

SATER service centre performs a multi-level cleaning procedure: first the standard service-menu cycle, then nozzle-plate soaking with specialised fluid, and if needed full removal of the printhead followed by ultrasonic cleaning and individual channel flushing. In parallel we check the service pump — the rubber pump element wears out, loses its seal and can no longer generate enough vacuum for the standard cleaning cycle. We replace the pump, the seals and the cap (parking station), and inspect the printhead flex cable for cracks. After every job we print a full nozzle-check test sheet — only once print quality is confirmed do we hand the printer back.

Epson EcoTank ink system and waste ink pad repair

The Epson EcoTank range (ET-series and L-series) is built around a continuous ink supply system — ink is stored in external tanks on the printer housing and fed to the printhead through flexible silicone tubes via dampers. The system is reliable, but it has its own characteristic faults that we see regularly.

First is air-locked lines. If the printer has stood unused for a long time, or the owner allowed the ink level to drop below minimum, air bubbles form in the tubes that the head cannot clear with standard cleaning. We manually prime the system through the service port and restore an uninterrupted ink column. Second is clogged dampers. The damper sits between the tube and the printhead and acts as a filter; over time it fills with pigment particles, and we replace dampers with new ones. Third is waste ink pad overflow. The pad in EcoTank models fills up faster than in cartridge printers because CISS systems need more cleaning cycles. We open the printer, clean or replace the pad, and reset the counter with a specialised service utility. All work carries a 3-month warranty.
