Makita LXT and XGT battery rebuilding

Makita 18V LXT (BL1830/1840/1850B/1860B) and 40V XGT (BL4040/4050F/4080F) battery rebuilding with high-current Li-ion cells. 6-month warranty.

3-month warranty

Makita 18V LXT (BL1830, BL1840, BL1850B, BL1860B, BL1890B) and the newer Makita 40V Max XGT (BL4025, BL4040, BL4050F, BL4080F) are the most common professional power-tool platform in Latvia. After 500–800 cycles capacity drops 30–50 %, the BMS chip can lock out the pack after deep discharge or cold storage, and the slide-on connector contacts often oxidise. We service the full LXT line (from BL1830 3.0 Ah through BL1890B 9.0 Ah), the compact CXT 12V Max packs (BL1015, BL1021B, BL1041B), and the newer XGT 40V Max high-voltage system used on large angle grinders, circular saws and garden tools. We also work on older Makita 14.4 V Li-ion packs and the rare NiMH/NiCd models when the original tool is in good shape. The process matches what we do on other power-tool packs: per-cell diagnostic, replacement of every cell with fresh high-current Li-ion cells matched to the pack's discharge current, a fresh BMS board, spot-welded interconnects, and a full load test. A rebuild costs 40–60 % less than a new OEM Makita pack and carries our 6-month warranty. Batteries are accepted and returned in person only.

Popular models we repair

  • Makita BL1830 (18V 3.0 Ah)
  • Makita BL1840 (18V 4.0 Ah)
  • Makita BL1850B (18V 5.0 Ah)
  • Makita BL1860B (18V 6.0 Ah)
  • Makita BL1890B (18V 9.0 Ah)
  • Makita BL4025 (40V XGT 2.5 Ah)
  • Makita BL4040 (40V XGT 4.0 Ah)
  • Makita BL4050F (40V XGT 5.0 Ah)
  • Makita BL4080F (40V XGT 8.0 Ah)
  • Makita CXT 12V Max (BL1015, BL1021B, BL1041B)

Common problems we fix

  • BL1860B or BL1890B will not charge — cell imbalance locks out the BMS
  • Makita LXT runtime reduced — cell wear after 500+ cycles
  • XGT 40V pack does not respond on the DC40RA charger — BMS communication error
  • Pack locked out after deep discharge or cold storage — BMS protection
  • Slide-connector contact oxidation — weak contact with the tool
  • BL1850B Star indicator shows an error — temperature or voltage sensor issue
  • Swollen cells deforming the housing — dangerous
  • Older Makita 14.4 V Li-ion packs worn out — still rebuildable

Detailed problem guides

Pick a symptom — we walk through the causes, what you can check yourself, and when to bring it in.

Makita 18V LXT — the standard for Latvian professional workshops

Makita LXT 18V is the most widely deployed professional 18V platform in Latvia — almost every construction crew, automotive workshop and serious DIY user has it. LXT packs use 18650 cells in 5S1P (BL1830 3.0 Ah), 5S2P (BL1840 4.0 Ah, BL1850B 5.0 Ah, BL1860B 6.0 Ah) or 5S3P (BL1890B 9.0 Ah) configurations. The Star Protection BMS guards against overheating, deep discharge and cell imbalance, but after 500–800 cycles (which is just 1–2 years for a professional user) capacity is already noticeably reduced.

The most frequent failure is wear on a single cell group while the others are still relatively healthy. The BMS registers the voltage imbalance and locks out the pack — it appears "empty" in the tool even though much of the capacity is still there. The second common problem is wear and oxidation on the slide-connector contacts: the pack runs intermittently or is not recognised in the tool. The third is BMS board failure after years of vibration and thermal stress. During a rebuild we replace all of these at once, so the rebuilt pack performs as if it were new.

Makita 40V XGT — the new high-voltage platform

Makita 40V Max XGT (Extreme Generation Technology) is the newer high-voltage Makita platform aimed at heavier tools — large angle grinders, circular saws, garden equipment and compressors. XGT uses 21700 cells in a 10S configuration, delivering higher power density than LXT 18V. XGT packs (BL4025, BL4040, BL4050F, BL4080F) include a built-in CIM (Communication Interface Module) that talks to the tool and charger about voltage state, temperature and cycle count.

We rebuild XGT packs with high-current 21700 Li-ion cells matched to Makita XGT discharge requirements. BMS board availability is more limited than for the LXT line because the platform is newer. Even so, a rebuild is feasible and economically attractive, especially on larger packs (BL4080F 8.0 Ah) where a new OEM pack is significantly more expensive. Older Makita 14.4 V Li-ion packs (BL1430, BL1440) are still rebuildable when the original tool is worth keeping.
