Vacuum Cleaner Repair

Corded vacuum cleaner repair in Riga: motor carbon brushes, bearings, cord retractors and thermal cut-outs. Miele, Bosch, Karcher.

3-month warranty

We repair corded vacuum cleaners in Riga. The most common failures are worn motor carbon brushes (arcing and power loss), seized motor bearings (low-frequency whine and raised current draw), a broken cord-rewind mechanism, and a thermal fuse that blew after prolonged operation with clogged filters. This page covers classic mains-powered vacuums — uprights, canisters with bags, bagless cyclonic models, and Thomas and Karcher wet/dry units. Cordless stick vacuums and robot vacuums are a separate service.

We work with every major brand: Miele (C3 Complete, Blizzard CX1), Bosch (BGL and BGS series), Siemens VS, Electrolux (UltraSilencer, Pure D9, EL80), Philips PowerPro, Thomas (Twin, Aquafilter), Karcher (VC series, WD wet/dry and SE carpet shampooers), Rowenta, Samsung canisters, Panasonic and AEG. Typical jobs include carbon-brush replacement, pressing out and refitting motor bearings (usually SKF or equivalent), rebuilding the rewind spring and slip ring, shortening the mains lead at the cracked entry point, replacing the thermal fuse and on/off switch, hose replacement, and cleaning or replacing HEPA and cyclonic filters.

We give an honest assessment of repair economics. Miele canisters originally priced at 300–500 euros are almost always cheaper to repair than to replace — the construction is durable and spare parts remain available even for models 10–15 years old. Entry-level supermarket vacuums at around 100 euros sometimes cost more to repair than to replace; we say so openly before any work starts. All repairs carry a 3-month warranty.

Common problems we fix

  • Worn motor carbon brushes — arcing, power loss, burning smell
  • Seized motor bearings — loud whining, raised current draw
  • Broken cord rewind mechanism — cable will not retract or jams
  • Damaged cable insulation at the strain relief — internal arcing
  • Blown thermal fuse — vacuum dead after an overheat event
  • Worn on/off switch — needs several presses to engage
  • Unresponsive power regulator — power stuck at maximum or minimum
  • Cracked or collapsed hose — suction loss
  • Clogged cyclonic filter — cleaning no longer restores flow
  • HEPA filter end-of-life — filtration efficiency drops
  • Bag-full microswitch fault — incorrect indicator signal

Vacuum motor, brush and filtration repair

The core of any corded vacuum is a single-phase universal motor with carbon brushes. The brushes wear down over time, and once they reach a critical length arcing starts at the commutator, the motor loses power and a characteristic burning smell develops. We dismantle the motor, inspect the commutator and fit new brushes — one of the most common and affordable interventions. If the commutator itself is badly worn, it can be turned down on a lathe, but after 10+ years of service a full motor replacement is usually the better value.

Bearing replacement is the next most common job. When the bearings wear, the motor develops a low-frequency whine, runs hot and draws more current — which eventually trips the thermal fuse and stops the vacuum altogether. We press out the worn bearings, fit new ones (typically SKF or equivalent) and check the rotor balance. In the filtration chain (dust bag, cyclonic filter, HEPA, motor protection filter) a clogged state is a frequent cause of overheating — we clean, replace the consumables and restore normal airflow. The thermal fuse (typically 120–140 °C) blows after prolonged operation with blocked filters — replacement is straightforward if the part is still available.

Cord rewind, electrics and repair economics

The cord rewind mechanism is a classic failure point on Miele, Bosch, Siemens and Electrolux canisters. The spring weakens, the slip ring wears, and the user ends up with a vacuum whose cable either will not retract or drops contact intermittently. We dismantle the rewind module, rebuild or replace the spring, clean and if necessary replace the slip ring. The cable insulation at the chassis entry point cracks right where the cord exits the housing — we shorten the cable and fit a new mains lead.

On the economics side: Miele Complete C3 and Blizzard CX1 canisters, originally priced at 300–500 euros, are almost always cheaper to repair than replace — the mechanics are durable, spares are available, and an equivalent new unit costs well above the repair bill. Philips PowerPro, Bosch BGL series and Electrolux UltraSilencer sit in the mid-range where repair is usually justified unless the entire electronics are damaged. Cheap supermarket vacuums in the 80–120 euro range (entry-level Tefal, Trisa, Clatronic) often are not worth repairing because labour alone approaches the price of a new unit — we say so openly before starting work, so the customer never makes a bad-value decision. Thomas and Kärcher wet/dry machines have long service lives and their repairs (typically motor or switch replacement) are fully economical.
