The Dyson V7, V8, V10, V11, V12, and V15 cordless vacuums are among the most popular in Latvia. They're powerful, convenient, and well-engineered. But like any appliance, they develop faults. And when a Dyson starts pulsing, loses suction, or refuses to charge, owners often don't know where to begin.

In this guide, we'll walk through the most common cordless Dyson faults, their causes, and what you can try at home before visiting a service centre.

Problem 1: Dyson Pulsing (Cutting In and Out)

This is the single most common Dyson complaint. The vacuum starts up, runs for a few seconds, then cuts out. It fires up again for a second, then stops. The cycle repeats for as long as you hold the trigger.

Causes of Pulsing

Blocked filter. This is cause number one. Every cordless Dyson has one or two washable filters (a pre-filter and a post-filter). When a filter is clogged with dust, the motor can't draw enough air, overheats, and enters a protective mode — pulsing to prevent burnout.

What to do:

  1. Remove both filters (location depends on the model — typically one on top of the body, the other behind the dust bin).
  2. Rinse the filters under cold running water. Do not use soap or detergent.
  3. Squeeze out the water thoroughly and leave to dry for a minimum of 24 hours. This is critical — a damp filter creates the same problem as a clogged one.
  4. Refit the dry filters and test.

Full dust bin. The bin is filled to the MAX line or above. Dust and debris clog the cyclones and block the airflow. Empty the bin — ideally after every use.

Blockage in the wand or attachment. A large piece of debris, hair, or a clump of dust can become lodged in the wand, at the join between wand and body, or inside the cleaner head. Detach all parts and check each one by looking through it.

Battery failure. If the filters are clean, the bin is empty, and there are no blockages, pulsing may be caused by a worn battery. The cells can no longer deliver a stable current to the motor. The vacuum starts, the voltage sags, and the protection circuit shuts the motor off.

What the Flashing Lights Mean During Pulsing

  • Flashing blue — filter blocked, airway obstruction, or bin full.
  • Flashing red (V10, V11) — battery issue or overheating.
  • Flashing amber (V12, V15) — blockage detected.

Problem 2: Loss of Suction

The vacuum runs and doesn't pulse, but suction is weak. Debris stays on the floor, carpets aren't getting clean.

Causes of Reduced Suction

Dirty filters. Even if the vacuum isn't pulsing, clogged filters reduce suction by 30-50%. Regular washing (once a month with daily use) is essential.

Airway blockage. Check:

  • The junction where the wand meets the body (hair and thread commonly accumulate here).
  • The inside of the wand.
  • The inlet to the dust bin.
  • The cyclone separator — fine dust can pack between the cyclone cones.

Worn seals. Rubber gaskets on the dust bin and at wand-to-body connections lose elasticity over time. Air leaks in around them, and suction drops. Inspect all seals and replace any that are damaged.

Brush bar clogged with hair. The motorised brush bar in the cleaner head wraps itself in hair, thread, and pet fur. This blocks rotation and reduces cleaning effectiveness. Cut away and remove wound-up hair with scissors — Dyson even supplies a dedicated tool for this in the box of some models.

Wrong mode. Make sure the vacuum is in the right mode. "Eco" mode on the V10/V11/V15 is considerably weaker than "Boost." For carpets, use "Auto" or "Boost."

Problem 3: Dyson Won't Charge

You dock the vacuum or connect the charger, but it doesn't charge. The indicator doesn't light up or flashes in an unusual pattern.

Causes

Faulty charger. The Dyson power supply can fail — especially after a power surge. Check: does the LED on the power supply light up? Try a different socket.

Dirty contacts. The contact pads on the vacuum and the docking station collect dust and oxidise. Wipe the contacts with a dry cloth or a cotton bud dipped in isopropyl alcohol.

Battery failure. If the battery has fully discharged and sat uncharged for a long period, it may have entered "deep discharge" — the battery controller blocks charging as a safety measure. Alternatively, the battery may simply have failed after 2-4 years of active use.

Control board fault. The circuit board inside the vacuum body manages charging, motor control, and safety features. If it's damaged, charging may not work even with a good battery and charger.

Solid blueFully charged

Flashing amberTemporary error — undock and redock

Problem 4: Brush Bar Not Spinning

The motorised brush bar in the cleaner head doesn't rotate. The head slides across the floor but doesn't clean.

Causes

Hair and debris blockage. The most common cause. Hair, thread, and pet fur wind around the brush bar and completely jam it. Remove the brush bar (usually by turning a locking mechanism), clear all wound-up debris, and refit.

Brush bar motor failure. The small motor inside the cleaner head drives the brush bar. If it's burnt out or seized, the brush bar won't spin. Motor replacement is a service centre job.

Contact failure. The electrical contacts where the cleaner head connects to the wand can oxidise or become damaged. Wipe the contacts and check the connection is secure.

Safety lockout. Some Dyson models (V11, V12, V15) automatically stop the brush bar when they detect excessive resistance — for example, if the bar is jammed or a large object has been sucked in. Switch off the vacuum, clear the obstruction, and restart.

Problem 5: Battery Draining Quickly

Instead of the advertised 30-60 minutes of run time, the vacuum lasts 5-10 minutes before cutting out.

Causes

Natural battery degradation. Lithium-ion batteries are rated for 500-800 full charge-discharge cycles. After that, capacity starts to decline. Following 2-3 years of active use, a battery can lose 30-50% of its original capacity.

Constant Boost mode use. Maximum power mode drains the battery 3-5 times faster than standard mode. If you always use "Boost," the advertised run time shrinks to 5-10 minutes.

Blocked filters. Dirty filters force the motor to work harder, which drains the charge faster. Clean filters = longer run time.

Defective battery. If the battery is swollen, gets hot during charging, or loses charge abruptly, it's faulty and needs replacing.

Maintenance: How to Extend Your Dyson's Life

Filters

  • Wash once a month with daily use; every 2-3 months with occasional use.
  • Dry for at least 24 hours — never refit damp filters.
  • Don't put filters in the dishwasher or use detergent.

Dust Bin

  • Empty after every use — don't wait for the MAX line.
  • Periodically rinse the bin and clear fine dust from the cyclones.

Brush Bar

  • Clear hair and thread after every clean.
  • Check the bristle condition — replace the brush bar when worn.

Battery

  • Don't store the vacuum with a fully drained battery — keep at least 20-30% charge.
  • Don't leave it on charge permanently — disconnect after a full charge (though modern Dysons have overcharge protection).
  • Avoid extreme temperatures — don't store on a balcony in winter.
