Black & Decker is the consumer (DIY) line of the Stanley Black & Decker group, built first and foremost for the home user: 18 V cordless drill/drivers BDCDC18 and BDCDD186, BCD003 hammer drills, ASD18 screwdrivers, the MultiEvo MT218 multi-tool, plus corded KR504, KR604 and KR911 hammer drills, KS501 / KS701 jigsaws, KG915 and KG2300 angle grinders, KX1650 / KX2000 heat guns, orbital sanders and LST-series string trimmers. They wear out predictably: a chuck that has developed runout, worn carbon brushes in corded models, an overheated or sagging battery slide-pack (Li-ion BL2018, BL1518, older NiCd HPB18 or A1718), a stripped plastic gear in the gearbox, a failed trigger switch, a charger that just blinks, or a heat gun with a burnt element or seized fan. We repair Black & Decker tools to the same standard as professional gear: replacing brushes and bearings, rebuilding the gearbox, re-soldering the trigger, repairing the battery BMS board and rebuilding packs by replacing degraded lithium-ion cells, and converting older NiCd HPB18 packs to modern Li-ion with a new protection board. That said, some DIY tools cost about the same in store as a component-level repair, so we start every job with an honest assessment: if a new tool is the better deal, we say so directly and return yours with no obligation. Common problems we fix
- Chuck runout and play — the bit drifts off-centre and the tool walks while drilling, a typical wear pattern on a DIY chuck
- 18 V battery (BL2018, BL1518) degradation — the tool quickly loses RPM under load and won't hold a charge
- Old NiCd pack HPB18 / A1718 dead — the pack will not charge or drains in a minute, the classic memory-effect failure

Black & Decker 18 V batteries — BL2018 / BL1518 slide-pack rebuilds and NiCd HPB18 conversions
The Black & Decker 18 V platform has used three battery types over the years: the older NiCd packs HPB18 and A1718 that shipped with tools through the 2010s, transitional NiMH packs, and modern lithium-ion slide-packs BL2018, BL1518, BL1318 used with the BDC series and MultiEvo. NiCd packs run out of life after 300–500 cycles and show the classic memory effect — the pack appears to charge but drains in a minute of use. With Li-ion slide-packs the most common fault is the BMS (Battery Management System) board itself going into deep-discharge protection, rather than the cells.
During diagnostics we determine exactly what has failed: we measure the voltage of each cell, check the BMS board for shorts and tripped protection, and assess actual capacity. There are several outcomes. For NiCd HPB18 — either a rebuild with the same NiCd cells (quick and inexpensive, the original life span returns), or a conversion to lithium-ion cells with a new protection board — three times the cycle life and no memory effect, but a Li-ion compatible charger will be required, and we cover that up front. For Li-ion BL2018 / BL1518 slide-packs — BMS board repair or replacement, replacement of individual degraded cells, or a full pack rebuild with new lithium-ion cells with verified ratings. After assembly the pack runs through a full charge-discharge cycle with an actual capacity measurement and a load test. Battery rebuilds carry a 6-month warranty.

The Black & Decker corded line is well-engineered but still budget-tier: a brushed motor, plastic gearing on entry-level models and metal on the better ones, and fairly simple speed-control electronics. The fault patterns are typical: carbon brushes wearing out at 100–150 hours of use (motor sparks, loses RPM, in the worst case will not start), trigger and speed-control switches sticking or wearing out, plastic gears chipping or stripping in the gearbox on entry-level KR504/KR604 hammer drills, loss of impact on the KR911 from a worn impact assembly, and worn blade clamps on KS501/KS701 jigsaws.
When we repair these we fully dismantle the tool, diagnose each subassembly, replace worn components with original or proven-compatible parts, refresh the gearbox grease, and reassemble with a bench test. On the KX1650 / KX2000 heat guns the most common failures are the heating element or the cooling fan — without airflow the thermal cutout trips quickly and shuts the gun down; we strip and clean the air channel, check the fan motor, and replace the heating element if needed. All workmanship carries a 3-month warranty.
