Hilti power tool repair
Hilti TE 6/30/70, AG 4S-A22, SF 6H, SFC 22: hammer mechanism, SDS-Plus/Max chuck, AVR, brushless Nuron electronics, B 22 battery rebuild.
Hilti is the most engineered tool brand at the premium end: the red plastic housing is recognisable from across a jobsite, lifespan is designed in for 10–20 years of daily work, and the Hilti Fleet Management leasing programme exists as a business model precisely because of that lifespan. Hilti reaches our bench when the in-house service has run its course (the Lifetime Tool Service warranty has expired, or the tool was bought used) but the owner wants to keep it working — and in most cases that is absolutely the right call, because replacing the impact mechanism on a rotary hammer or the AVR damper costs 3–5x less than a new same-series model.
The typical workload, repeated month after month: a TE 6-A22 that has lost impact (a worn ⌀ 10 mm striker or seals on the pneumatic piston group — the characteristic diagnosis after 800–1,500 hours into concrete), a TE 30 / TE 70 that shakes with the handle wandering (this is the AVR — Active Vibration Reduction — system, the internal damper Hilti was first to make standard on rotary hammers; the seals inside the damper dry out after 6–8 years), an AG 4S-A22 angle grinder overheating into thermal protection (cooling channels around the stator clogged with dust, plus wear in the ⌀ 22 mm spindle bearings), an SF 6H-A22 drill/driver that will not hold charge (the diagnosis is either the B 22 BMS board or specific Li-Ion 18650 cell degradation in the pack), an SDS-Plus or SDS-Max chuck that will not lock the bit (worn ⌀ 5 mm locking balls and a tired retainer spring).
We cover the full lineup: TE 6/7/14/16/30/70/1000-AVR/2000-AVR (rotary hammers and breakers), AG 4S-A22, AG 500-A36, AG 600-A36 (angle grinders), SF 6H/6T-A22, SFC 22 (drill/drivers), DD 30/110/250 (diamond drilling rigs — we work the housing, motor and cooling; the wet-coolant circuit goes to specialised wet-service centres), SCM 22 (reciprocating saws), SC 22 (circular saws), plus C4/C7/C36 chargers and B 22 / Nuron 22V batteries. DX powder-actuated and BX cordless fastening tools are accepted by prior arrangement — they are a specialised tool class with their own handling rules. We agree the cost before any work; on-site diagnostics is free. Battery cell replacements carry a 6-month warranty; everything else, 3 months.

- SF 6H / SFC 22 will not start under load — brushless controller or thermal sensor failure
- SDS-Plus / SDS-Max chuck won't lock the bit — worn locking balls or retainer spring
- C4/C36 charger not charging — power board or thermal sensor failure
- WSR 22-A reciprocating saw losing stroke — guide rail or piston mechanism wear
- Trigger sticks — speed-controller contact oxidation
Impact mechanism and AVR — the core assemblies on Hilti rotary hammers
Hilti TE-series rotary hammers are built around a pneumatic impact mechanism: the electric motor drives a crank through the gearbox; the crank moves a piston in the barrel; the piston strikes a striker through an air "cushion" that transfers energy to the bit. The design is reliable, but over time the piston sealing rings wear and compression is lost — the hammer keeps drilling but the impact disappears or weakens sharply. This is the most common fault on TE 6, TE 30 and TE 70 after intensive use.
We open the barrel and inspect the striker, piston, intermediate shaft and seals. Where wear is present we replace the piston group entirely, refresh the lubricant (Hilti uses a specific grease that differs from standard lithium types) and verify operation under load. TE 30, TE 70-AVR and TE 1000-AVR additionally carry an Active Vibration Reduction system — an internal damper that absorbs the recoil pulse. When it wears, the handle starts to "wander" noticeably and work becomes tiring. We replace the AVR damper as a separate operation, without full gearbox disassembly.
B 22 / Nuron platform — batteries and chargers
Hilti runs two main cordless platforms: B 22 (22V, the classic line for most 2010–2022 models) and Nuron (a newer 22V with extended electronics, since 2022). Batteries on both lines use Li-Ion cells in 21700 (Nuron, Hi-Power B 22) and 18650 (standard B 22) formats, with a sophisticated BMS that handles cell balancing, deep-discharge protection, thermal control and tool communication over the Hilti protocol.
When a B 22 / Nuron battery will not hold charge the cause is usually one of three: cell degradation (a natural process after 800–1500 charge cycles), BMS board failure (an electronic fault — the battery is "invisible" to the charger or tool), or mechanical contact damage. We open the housing, load-test each cell, replace degraded ones with new quality Li-Ion, and inspect or repair the BMS at the component level. C 4/12-50, C 4/36-90, C 4/36-350 and Nuron chargers are repaired too — typical faults are the power board, power transistors, thermal sensor and connector. Cell replacements carry a 6-month warranty.
